Engineering by its very nature is a creative profession. Rapid social and technological changes prompt and require engineers to think creatively, resulting in evolution of new technologies. If your mind compels you to question, explore, invent, discover, and create; then engineering could be the ideal profession for you. The last decade has seen a tremendous change in the attitude of people towards their careers. Career planning has become an integral part of development process for students aiming at a professional career. Today’s generation has multiple career options accessible starting with a Graduation Degree. A Bachelors Degree in Engineering             (B.Tech.) is one such option for an inquisitive and logically sound mind.

B.Tech. Degree unravels two alternatives: first being to treat B.Tech. as terminal qualification and the second is to continue further studies.

Choosing an appropriate specialization will unveil manifold opportunities, besides offering priority during interviews, and a sound grip over the subject. The choice of specialization should be ideally driven by your aptitude, interest, future professional opportunities, background and family support.

For the second alternative, you can do Technical Post Graduate courses like M.S./M.Tech. or Management Post Graduate Courses like MBA/PGDM and then even go to obtain a Ph.D. Besides this, once your graduation is complete, competitive examinations of the Government services like IAS/IPS or Armed forces like Navy/CDS or PSU’s and Bank examinations can also be taken depending on the career of your choice.

If you prefer doing further studies like M.S./M.Tech./MBA/PGDM, there are different competitive examinations for the same. You need to appear for GRE(1)/GMAT(2) and TOEFL(3) for doing M.S./MBA in foreign countries. In order to take admission in M.Tech. Program of an Indian University, a student has to appear for GATE(4) examination. To get into the IIM’s or to get into good University Management Programs you would need to appear for the CAT(5)/MAT(6)/XAT(7)/State Entrance Examinations.

GRE(1): The Graduate Record Examination or GRE is a standardized test and is an admission requirement for many graduate schools in English speaking countries.

GMAT(2): The Graduate Management Admissions Test, better known by the acronym GMAT (pronounced G-mat), is a standardized test for determining aptitude to succeed academically in graduate business studies.

TOEFL(3): The Test of English as a Foreign Language (or TOEFL®, pronounced “toe-full” or sometimes “toffle”) evaluates the potential success of an individual to use and understand Standard American English at a college level. It is required for non-native applicants at many English-speaking colleges and universities. A TOEFL score is valid for two years and then is deleted from the official database.

GATE(4): Conducted by one of seven Indian Institutes of Technology in rotation, Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an annual exam for admission to M.Tech. and M.S. program in most engineering institutes in India.

CAT(5): Common Admission Test is conducted by IIMs in India for entry to various IIMs present in India. Admissions are based on the scores in CAT exam followed by the GD/PI process.

MAT(6): Management Aptitude Test (MAT) is a National Entrance Test conducted by All India Management Aptitude Testing Service (AIMATS), for admission to MBA and equivalent programmes of the various participating institutes. AIMA-MAT is conducted 4 times a year: in February, May, September and December.

XAT(7): The Xavier Aptitude Test (XAT) is a national level aptitude test conducted in India by XLRI (formerly known as Xavier Labour Relations Institute), a business school in Jamshedpur in the state of Jharkhand in India, as an entrance test for its and other highly reputed institutes, including Xavier Institute of Management and Goa Institute of Management programmes.
